3 ACT STRUCTURE

What Jobs are in this Department?

  • Screenwriter - Write screenplays for films, TV shows, or other visual media. Develop and refine script ideas, often in collaboration with directors, producers, and other stakeholders.

  • Story Editor - Works closely with the showrunner or executive producers to develop ideas, determine the direction of the show, and oversee the writers’ room. They collaborate with writers to develop stories, provide feedback on scripts, and ensure that practical issues like continuity and running time are met.

  • Director - Responsible for bringing the script to life, guiding the entire production, and ensuring the final product aligns with their creative vision. From pre-production, to principal photography (production), to post-production. Communicates with producers and other stakeholders to ensure the project stays on schedule and budget. Makes key creative decisions, such as changes to the script or shooting schedule.

  • Director of Photography - (DP) Works closely with the director to determine the look, color, lighting, and framing of each shot, translating the director’s vision into reality on screen. The DP makes pivotal decisions about camera equipment selection, shot compositions, lighting setups, camera movements, and color palette and grading.

  • Production Designer - Develops a visual concept for the film, TV show, or stage production, working closely with the director, producer, and other key creatives. Creates a visual plan, including scale drawings or models, to ensure the sets, locations, and costumes align with the director’s vision.
